When it comes to staining your deck, timing is key. Many people believe that this is a chore that can be done any time of year, but that is simply not the case, at least in our area (if you’re in a warm region like Florida, you could probably get away with it). If you’re planning to stain your deck, fall is the perfect time to do it!
Fall is the ideal season to stain your deck because the weather is (usually) on our side. We don’t stain in winter because, aside from it being too cold, there’s usually snow. Clearly snow would not be good conditions for staining. The spring is likewise not good for staining because of the rain. It also tends to rain a lot in the summer, and even when it isn’t raining there is humidity to deal with. The wood of your deck will be soaking up all that moisture and it won’t leave anywhere for the stain to set. If you tried staining during wet or humid conditions, you’d end up with a ruined deck. By process of elimination that leaves the fall as the best time to stain your deck. This year has been particularly wet and rainy in this area, but typically the fall is the driest time. The time period from August to October is ideal because it is not too hot, not too cold, and as dry as we can hope for.
Good Deck Conditions
Another reason that fall is an ideal time to stain your deck is that you’re not using it as much. It would be such a waste to do the task of staining in the summer and then miss out on a whole stretch of perfect deck days because you were waiting for it to dry. There is down time associated with the process. You have to move everything off the deck, clean it, apply the stain, wait for it to dry for a day or two, then apply the sealant. Wait, what sealant? Yes, sealant that protects the color and has UV protection is a must, unless you want it to turn grey in a matter of months. You won’t want this whole process to keep you from enjoying your deck in the peak of summer, so fall is perfect.
