How to Clean a Vinyl Fence

How to Clean a Vinyl Fence

There are multiple ways to clean a vinyl fence and keep it looking good as new!

Cleaning a vinyl fence is simple enough; it only takes water, detergent, and some form of elbow grease. In particular, vinyl fences are well known for their easy maintenance. Even so, they too can begin to harbor mold, mildew, and stains. Below are several tools and strategies to clean a vinyl fence for a sparkling finish.

Garden Hose

Before cleaning your fence with any detergent, it is always a good idea to wash it down with water in preparation. Rinsing the fence with a garden hose will be enough to get off loose dirt and help loosen stuck-on grime.

Pressure Washer

Another method is to use a pressure washer. One can rent one from the local department store. There are different types of pressure washers, such as gas vs. electric and PSI (pounds per square inch) vs. GPM (gallons per minute.) The ideal PSI is between 2,000 and 2,800 PSI. One can also use different types of pressure washer nozzles and add detergent to the water. All in all, the pressure washer is arguably a go-to tool to blast grime off a wood, composite, or vinyl fence.

Different Types of Detergents

Your choice of detergent will depend on what kind of dirt you are tackling. If your fence is only mildly dirty, water alone might be enough. For mild cases, one can use a touch of dish detergent in your bucket of warm water.

For tougher stains and dirt, however, you have several options. One is to use one part bleach for every five parts of water. This method might work best on a white fence to avoid the risk of ruining your fence color. Remember to wear rubber gloves when working with this solution.

Another option is to use vinegar. Mold, mildew, and germs hate white vinegar, so one can combine half a cup of white vinegar with a gallon or two of water, wash the fence with it, and rinse it off.

Lastly, one can purchase a commercial vinyl fence cleaner. You don’t have to worry about mixing solutions, and you can take care of mold or iron stains easily.

Preventative Care

There are many ways to clean a vinyl fence, but how do you keep it clean? Well, by regularly cleaning it! It is easier to wash it routinely than to let it develop tough stains. You can also apply a special mold-resistant coating if mold and mildew are common issues.
