Ideas for Gardening on Deck

Grow a garden on your deck this summer with one of these ideas!

Summer is a fantastic time to be outside, and what better way to do so than on your backyard deck? From the comfort of home, you can enjoy the outdoors and the hobbies that come with it, including gardening. If your green thumb is itching to cultivate some vines, herbs, vegetables, or flowers, here are some ideas to get you started gardening on deck.

Window Boxes

A window box hanging either on the rim of a window or the deck can be a good place to start. You can purchase a few from your local home improvement store or make a fun DIY project out of it. Window boxes are great for preserving deck space while making room for herbs and flowers.

If you want a garden and some extra privacy, a trellis or two makes a fantastic solution. You can install a lattice or trellis separate from the container or purchase a trellis attached to a planter box. Some species of beans, cucumbers, tomatoes, and pumpkins can do well on trellises. Meanwhile, honeysuckle, wisteria, morning glory, trumpet vine, and dozens of other species can make your deck a flowering haven.

On the other hand, if you have the deck space, you can go with a variety of pots for your plants. Container gardening may change how you care for some vegetables, but can provide a little more security against squirrels when on a deck. If you wish to avoid bending and squatting, a raised container may work best.

Vertical Pockets

If you’ve got an old, shoe pocket organizer, you have one way to create a vertical garden. Vertical gardening is a trend for those in tight spaces. One can use various devices, including a trellis, hanging pots, and an old bookcase, to save space and still cultivate home-grown vegetables.

Custom Containers

For some, gardening is a lifelong passion. If this is true for you, you may want to invest in something more permanent. Deck builders can build custom planters right into the deck; they can tastefully design and place them for easy access. Your deck will always have a place for greenery to flourish and you to grow it.
